NFM Symphony Orchestra (NFMSO)
The NFM Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1945 and since the onset of its activities has drawn from the rich music traditions of its home city Wrocław. Previously, it was known under the following names: Philharmonic (1945-1949), Wrocław Symphony Orchestra (1954-1958) and the Wrocław Philharmonic (1958-2014). In 1994 the orchestra changed its name to the W. Lutosławski Philharmonic in Wrocław.
In 2013 Benjamin Shwartz became artistic director of the NFMSO, following Jacek Kaspszyk who led the orchestra for the previous seven years.
The NFM Symphony Orchestra cooperates with preeminent guest conductors: Nicolas Collon, Gabriel Chmura, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Krzysztof Penderecki, Pascal Rophé, Dima Slobodeniouk, George Tchitchinadze and Stefan Solyom.
Among its numerous recordings, including radio and TV productions, the project of releasing on CDs the complete works of Witold Lutosławski is of particular importance. It is carried out in partnership with the CD Accord label. The second disc in the Witold Lutosławski. Opera omnia series entitled Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4 was recorded under the baton of Jacek Kaspszyk and awarded Fryderyk 2011 in the ‘Album of the Year ― Symphonic and Concertante Music’ category. In 2013 a disc with Lutosławski’s Symphony No. 1 and Concerto for Orchestra under the baton of the living legend Stanisław Skrowaczewski was released, alongside the live recording of a concert featuring the NFMSO with Terje Rypdal during the Jazztopad Festival 2009 and released as the first ever recording of a Polish ensemble in the catalogue of the prestigious ECM label.
International promotion of Polish music is a special focus in the orchestra’s activity. Over the last years the NFMSO has presented works by Karol Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki, touring Europe and the United States. In April 2014 the NFMSO under the baton of Gabriel Chmura played pieces by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Witold Lutosławski in Belgium.
In the 2014/2015 season the orchestra performs with Avi Avital, Gabor Boldoczki, Ruben Gazarian, Boris Giltburg, Philippe Herreweghe, Andrey Korobeynikov, Marek Pijarowski, Clemens Schuldt, Julian Steckel, Jonathan Stockhammer, Antje Weithaas and Ariel Zuckermann.
